The N.I.E is a legal document required if you are in Spain for more than 3 months. It is a fiscal identity number you must have to buy a house, car, start a business, or for general employment purposes.
To obtain your N.I.E you will need to visit your local foreigner's office, fill out the correct forms and be ready for some queuing! Many people who don't speak Spanish use translators to help them obtain their NIE.
The NIE states your name, address and a number. Each family member must have their own NIE and it is registered in the Spanish national computer database. Solicitors or accountants often obtain them for clients when they buy a property in Spain but be careful to always ask for it as they often get lost within a mountain of paper work and you must always guard your original copy!
